Just as in many other areas in life the Internet is a very enjoyable place provided that you take a few small steps to ensure your safety and security. There are four things you should do if you connect your PC to the Internet regardless of whether you use it for things such as online banking or purchasing goods where you transmit sensitive data:
- Install a firewall – this prevents intruders getting in and your information getting out.
- Install antivirus software – this prevents malicious software being installed on your PC.
- Update the virus pattern in your antivirus software regularly – the viruses most likely to succeed in infecting your PC are the new ones as your antivirus software may not be aware of them. Automatic updates are best.
- Keep your system patched – Microsoft and others offer free updates to their software to fix bugs and vulnerabilities. You can find further information on securing your home PC at https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4092060/windows-keep-your-computer-secure-at-home
